Available courses

First and Second year university students will meet a general education, humanities course requirement with EWP 290 Research, Writing, and Humanities. The course requires three hours of discussion and group work per week, and is intended for students who have had an introductory writing course. The aim is to examine the views of nature and the environment as they are expressed by selected writers, poets and essayist. Informal and Formal writing, research, oral presentation, and written documents are required with an emphasis on critical thinking and reading. Attention will be given to literacy practices specific to students’ specific academic discipline.

Students who successfully complete EWP 290 will demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Compose texts that investigate a focused topic of inquiry around the environment.
  • Write a research-based essay integrating primary and secondary research.
  • Critically analyze various works of environmental literature and/or creative non-fiction.
  • Research and write collaboratively.

Course projects will include a combination of higher and lower stakes assessments. The higher stakes assessments will include 1) a diagnostic video/manuscript, 2) a pre-research proposal manuscript, and a 3) research proposal presentation. Lower stakes assessments will be plentiful and will include collaborative projects which are produced to inform the higher stakes assessments.
